Spatial thinking is an increasingly important skill for living and working in the 21st Century.
Over the past 10 years Technologies such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Satellite Remote Sensing (eg. Google Earth) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have all become increasingly important.
Geocraphic Information System (GIS) technology can help schools teach these skills to students.

What is Geospatial Technology?

In the simplest form, it is any software or hardware that interacts with real world locations.
Whether GIS, GPS or 3D Visualisations all involve a spatial Dimension and have the capacity to capture, display and muipulate spatial data.

The term GIS (Geographic Information System) is technology that offers a different way in which we produce and use maps that are required to manage our communities and industries.

The technology uses computer programs to link items displayed on a map with records in a database and the answers displayed on a map.
It is a powerful and dynamic tool.
With a touch of a button a GIS can create intelligent super maps through which sophisticated planning and analyis can be performed.

GPS - Global Positioning System is a network of 24 Satellites equipped with atomic clocks and equally accurate position measuring telemetry gear.

GIS and GPS has resulted in a steady stream of new applications on an ongoing basis.

We can help with education of Spatial Technologies and practical applications to students of any level.

Promoting Spatial Technologies at Karabar High School - Queanbeyan, NSW
Emerg Solutions have been engaged in a working relationship with at Karabar High School, Queanbeyan, NSW to promote GIS in the education sector.

Spatial Technologies at Emmanuel College - Warrnambool

The Newtech Conference run by the Department of Sustainability and Environment was held in Warrnambool. The Newtech Conferences provide opportunities for people involved in the use and development of land and spatial information in Victoria to keep abreast of government policies and directions, to stimulate professional development and promote new technologies.

Emerg Solutions arranged a visit to the local secondary school "Emmanuel College" where students from the school were able to inspect two command and emergency vehicles and see a demonstration of emergency management and mapping.

Effective GIS Learning for Students
An effective way of introducing GIS to Students is through fun, interactive maps and games. Below is a list of some websites which demonstrate this:

MAPZONE:
MapZone is a totally free, bright and lively web site produced by Ordnance Survey that aims to teach children, between 7 and 16 years, mapping skills in a fun way. This free resource offers interactive play with stimulating questions and answers together with animations and games to make the structured learning process a joy to come back to. To access MapZone, please visit the following website: MapZone

Find the landmark Maps Game:
This fun game involves having to find locations on a Google Map. The game has a large number of categories, such as countries, cities, mountains etc. A really nice feature of the game is that you are given ‘hotter’ or ‘colder’ hints as you move around the map. Your guesses are timed and there is a ‘time to beat’ score, which I assume is the quickest time that a player has found that location. To access the Landmark Map Game, please visit the following website: LandMark Map Game.

Latitude Phoenix - GIS Software used by Emerg Solutions
The GIS software by AusSoft Soulutions called ‘Latitude’ is a powerful, easy to manage, cost effective Geographic Information System designed to be fully customisable to easily implement into any year Level.

Latitude is simple to use, minimal training is required, and it has been designed so that laypeople can use the software within a couple of hours.
